Tool parameters

Tool number

This is used by default in the TCP manager and should ideally match the tool number used in real life.

Tool name

A name for the tool, used for reference only. It does not affect the program. Use a short, unique name that makes it easy to identify the tool.

For example, Face Mill 30 mm dia.

Tool description

More descriptive text will be included alongside the tool name in some areas of Robotmaster.

For example, Face Mill 30 mm dia 5 mm max depth 6 flutes.

Milling tool type

Set the Milling tool type to apply parameters to the tool.

Radial Mill
CNC bore drill.

...

Dovetail Mill
CNC counter bore drill with a flat (non-angled) tip.

...

Taper Mill
Counter sink drill. Use Tip angle to match angle of countersink.

Barrel Mill

Mill tool with an elongated bulb-shaped fluted section. Use Diameter, Flute Length, and Barrel Radius to model the cutting section of the tool.

Milling tool dimensions

...

Diameter

Diameter of the cutting portion of the tool.

Length

Exposed length of the milling tool from tip to end. Any portion of the tool seated in a chuck or tool holder should not be included in the length.

Length is used for TCP placement and collision detection.

Flute length

Length of the fluted cutting section of the tool. The fluted section is indicated in yellow in the Preview and the viewport.

Shoulder length

Length of the fluted section plusthe smooth section of the milling tool. The smooth section of the tool has the same diameter as the fluted section.

If the entire explosed tool is fluted, set:

  • Shoulder length = Flute length = Length

  • Arbor diameter = Diameter

Arbor diameter

If the tool has an arbor at the shank end, you can enter a diameter for it. Including an arbor in the model allows you to see depth limits for the tool relative to a hole and can help with collision detection.

Arbor length is automatically calculated based on Length, Flute length, and Shoulder length.

If the entire tool is the same diameter, set:

  • Arbor diameter = Diameter

Tip angle

Certain milling tools have an angled tip. This includes Chamfer Mill, Dovetail Mill, Taper Mill, and Engraving Mill.

...

Tip angle has no effect on the length of the tool.

Tip radius

Angled tool tips with a flat bottom can be modeled using tip radius.

...

Corner radius

Corner radius can be applied at the outer bottom of the fluted section of some mill tools, such as the Bull End Mill.

...

Barrel radius

For Barrel Mill tools, Barrel radius is used with Diameter and Flute length to model tool shape. The barrel section is fit onto the available Flute length.

...

When defining tool geometry, keep in mind that cell collision detection can be refined such that the flute, arbor, and holder are treated separately for collisions. If the flute is excluded from the collision group for a workpiece, it will allow the flute to come into contact with the workpiece without causing a collision in Robotmaster.
